Ganesha festival in the heart of France (Lyon)

GANESHA IDOL

Ganesha also spelled Ganesh, also called Ganapati, elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings, who is traditionally worshipped before any major enterprise and is the patron of intellectuals, bankers, scribes, and authors. … Like a rat and like an elephant, Ganesha is a remover of obstacles.

He is also known as Vighna Harta (the one who takes away all the difficulties and eases the path). In India, there is a festival called GANESH CHATURTHI which is the main festival of Maharashtra, where the idol is bought and worshipped for 10 days and lots of celebration takes place and hence the well-being and return of Ganesha is all that is wished for.

“But is it only India that celebrates Ganesh- Utsav?” the answer would be super surprising to my readers, let me bring to your knowledge that even France (Lyon) celebrates it and the best celebration takes place at LE FREHINDI.

Amazed! But it’s true.

The grand celebration lasts for ten days, which keeps up the traditions and rituals of the festival. On a concluding day, the idol of Ganesh is placed on a beautiful chariot, decorated with flowers and garlands, and the chariot is driven through the street of Lyon.

“You must be thinking that it’s ok if France celebrates the festival, but what about other religious people, do they participate?”

Then let me answer that “yes”, it’s like a confluence of people belonging to different faith and religion coming together to celebrate the glory of the birth of Lord Ganesha, nearly 4,000 people celebrate the birth of the elephant god Ganesh, discover the chariot of the facetious god, during a parade, in Rillieux-la-Pape or next in the morning Place Bellecour with the Indian market in the afternoon as they paraded through the streets of the French capital in a festival held each year for the past 21 years.

As the parade left the temple of Ganesh, devotees made their way through the large crowd, banging on drums and dancing barefoot, some in a state of near trance, as they carried offerings on their shoulders, leading the procession, will parade pipers, nageshvaram players, and drummers, dancers wearing on their shoulders the large arch of peacock feathers (kavadi) and on their heads clay pots with burning camphor.

All along the route, coconuts will be cracked open: the shell symbolizing the illusion of the world, the flesh the individual karma, and the water the human-ego. By breaking the coconut, one offers his heart to Ganesha. The water of hundreds of coconuts will be poured on the pavement when Ganesha float passes.

PEOPLE CELEBRATING GANESH FESTIVAL IN LYON.

Pulled by two 20-m long ropes made of plant fiber, the 5-m high float houses the statue of Ganesha the elephant-headed god. It will be entirely covered in red and white fabrics and decorated with numerous garlands and fresh flowers, entire bananas bunches, coconuts, and areca palm leaves.

The float will be followed by singers and musicians. All along the route, blessed offerings, treats, and fresh drinks will be given away.

The Ganesh Chaturthi is the fourth day of a festival that celebrates the birth of the Hindu god who represents prosperity and good fortune. The celebration traditionally lasts 10 days in the same way as it lasts in Maharashtra.

Le frehindi celebrates the same in their office with the welcoming of the lord and performing all the religious rites, they also organize winter camps on the occasion of this event and also special tour and to visit Lyon on Ganesh Chaturthi

This explains that Lord Ganesha is not only for an individual, he is for everyone and anyone. It doesn’t matter whether a person is Hindu or of any other religion, whoever worships him is blessed.
