Should coding be introduced from class 6?

We find people all around us talking about coding but what exactly is it? Let us know. Coding is a language of the computers with which we can create computer software, apps, and websites. Browsers, mobile applications, social media, and many other websites – they’re all made with code.

According to the New Education Policy that has been approved by the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, students will be taught Coding as a subject from as early as class 6th.

According to School Education, secretary Anita Karwal students of class 6 and onwards will be taught coding in schools as a part of 21st-century skills because we can see that the world is changing. Everything depends on coding and programming languages. If the children will start learning it from class six, it will not only enhance their thinking abilities but also make them job-ready for the future which is dominated by data sciences.

In the next few years, not much importance would be given to basic school lessons but a child would be ranked based on his digital literacy. With the dawn of the internet and growing new technologies every day like 5G coming into the market there would be a visible paradigm shift in the way we pursue education. Everything then would be upon the new education policy.

If we do not introduce coding in schools, then our children will be at a huge disadvantage and the future would be precarious. The world today is digital and after the covid-19 pandemic big and small, all kinds of companies are shifting towards online platforms to carry on their businesses. Coding helps children with communication, creativity, math, writing, and makes them the confident ones in the room. Coding is a tool. Human beings are not designed to handle a large amount of data so we have to depend on machines for the same. We use software and give commands to the system using a programming language, it then works for us. We could say that this is a communication between a human and software to solve the problems. The goal being that you reach a point where you give a command and the software responds appropriately based on your instruction. Programming is the foundation of robotics, video games, apps, computer graphics, and much more. Each of these programs is a set of instructions; a sequence of short commands, one after another, with programming used as the tool to write and disseminate those individual instructions.

This new policy to teach students coding from class 6th onwards is going to be very much beneficial for our generation; as the new generation will be ready for a future that relies heavily on digital tools for all of its tasks. It will make their education future-proof and give them better prospects at finding a job in a digital world.

As AI is introduced in more places, it will be used to automate and increase the efficiency and speed of many manual tasks. Students who are adept at coding will help in revolutionizing the change through this technology. Even if a student does not choose coding as their primary career, having its knowledge can still benefit them in any of their chosen industry.

According to so many researchers, coding helps develop an analytical mindset, problem-solving attitude, and creativity in children. It has a good effect on developing brains. Teaching coding from Class 6 will help India develop better engineers. They in turn will bring in new ideas and solutions that we haven’t even heard of. Students with knowledge of coding will find it easier with new technologies hence will be able to better ensure their employability in a fast-paced world.

“As per The Future of Jobs Report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2019, 65% of the children entering primary school right now will be working in jobs that don’t even exist right now.”

Coding/Computer programming is the future-

With technology evolving every day, coding is an extremely useful skill to possess. There is an increasing number of businesses that rely on computer code, not just those in the software field.

A child, who has learned to code, will be ahead in skills and have more employment opportunities in the future. No matter which industry they decide to enter whether it is in the technology sector, finance, retail, health, or other. This is an important reason why coding should be taught in schools. Experienced computer programmers are in demand and with the advancement of technology, there are increasing career opportunities arising every day. Because qualified computer programmers are hard to come by, they can earn a good amount. If students learn to code at a young age, their experience starts young and they are more likely to grow up with an interest in the software industry, therefore contributing to our future.

Today we can’t imagine our daily life without the aid of technology and to improvise technology children must know about this from a young age. Learning how to code is not an easy task so it is necessary to learn early to understand it completely. Appliances that we use in our daily life like mobile phones, calculators, washing machines and juicers, etc all work through a command, and shortly soon it is very much possible that they would run on complete coding. So, to learn coding from childhood is a good decision by our government.

Every coin has two sides, so has this decision. Concerns are being raised about the time children today are spending with technology. Educators and parents will have to work together to ensure that this does not have an impact on the time children spend interacting, playing, and bonding with friends and family in the real world. But still, as the students are free to choose their subject, it has become much easier to see that the benefits of this move far outweigh the demerits.

The new education system is increasingly realizing the importance of skill-based learning and the need to educate the future generations with new-age techs such as artificial intelligence, machine, and analytics. Apart from schools, colleges and universities are introducing courses specifically dedicated to these new technologies. Introducing these skills while imparting academic flexibility will increase the quality of the workforce and unlock the construction of a new nation. It will not only create a competitive workforce of the 21st century but also establish India as a leader in innovative technologies.
