Why is India attractive to the French Tourists?

The current pandemic has brought tourism industry to a standstill however; thinking of travel is absolutely involuntary. Even though the idea of travelling at the moment seems farfetched, we are bound to dream of one. While we are at it, here are some insights I would like to give on India’s attraction amongst the French.

India remains one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. Apart from its many religions and sects, India is home to innumerable castes and tribes, all speaking different languages. There are 23 official languages spoken in India.

India is a magical land, rich in its history and heritage. One of the oldest civilizations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. This culturally magnificent country has a great deal to offer to its viewers, both from its own country as well as the foreign land.

Contemporary India’s physical prosperity and cultural dynamism is seen in the pace of its agricultural expansion, and in its rich and vibrant cultural exports of architecture, art, music, literature, and cinema. This conglomeration is attracting tourists from all over the world. Tourism plays an extremely integral role in boosting India’s economy.

With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. There are 38 World Heritage sites in India that are recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as of August 2019. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity. As you travel through this extensive country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history, and adventure sports. India is an enchanting mix of old and new. As the rustic old bazaars and majestic palaces cross roads with the ultramodern malls and luxurious hotels, the quintessential traveler can get the best of both worlds. While the mountains in the north showcase its beautiful white landscapes; the backwaters and beaches in the south cast its impeccable beauty. India is vastly popular amongst the Europeans. France is one of the European countries that are exceedingly interested in visiting India.

The Indo-French relations can be traced back to the times of World War I and II. Their relations have traditionally been close and friendly and both countries have a ‘special relationship’ with each other. Both nations have a centuries-old history of trade relations. Since then, France has shown a lot of interest in India.

As known, the French are avid travelers and are seen exploring every inch of land they can step on to. India is a fairly new attraction amongst the French travelers. They find the Indian land very intriguing and are usually mesmerized by the exceptional diversity that it offers. In today’s times, the French have shown increasing interests in visiting India. The fascinating blend of ancient and modern aspects has drawn attention of the French travelers

A lot more reasons can be highlighted to back this newly found admiration of India amongst French tourists. Most importantly, due to the strengthened bond between the Indian and French government, India welcomes France with open arms thus, making the French feel congenial towards India. Another important factor is the monetary aspect. India offers relatively cheaper travel options to its travelers. For the French tourists, travelling to India is relatively less expensive and they can enjoy whole-heartedly in a limited budget. It has made it easier for them to spend more time in the country and explore the vast land without burning a hole in their pockets.  This is the striking reason why a lot of travelers from France are choosing India as their travel option. Indians are infamous for their hospitality and generosity. Indians are known to consider their guests on high regard. Their motto for the tourism sector is ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’; a Sanskrit phrase which translates to ‘Guests are equivalent to God’. This philosophy embodies the dynamic host-guest relationship where guests are revered with the same respect as God. A lot of French tourists have also been seen consistently travelling to India to get the first-hand experience of this warmth. They are seen to be in awe of the kind and welcoming nature of Indians which make them feel at home.

While talking about the budget and the friendly relations, it is also important to throw light on the geographical diversity that India offers. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore to meet the taste of everyone. The grandeur of huge palaces and forts in Rajasthan brings the royal experience to life, while the Goan beaches will allow you to sit back and relax. There are some commercial cities like Mumbai and Delhi to give an urban feel to these travelers. Culturally rich Rajasthan, Snowcapped Himalayan range visible from Himachal Pradesh, breezy beaches and nocturnal vibes in Goa are a few major attractions amongst the French tourists. Some come to experience the fantastic and colorful Holi parties in spring while some come to attend other culture and art festivals happening across the country. India welcomes tourists all-round the year. An immersive experience through this mystical land has been attracting the French a lot. Each state in India is exclusive and offers a different style to its travelers. From language to cuisine, each state is unique. This is one of the principal reasons for this incessant travel attraction towards India.

With the exceedingly growing relations between India and France, we can expect a significant ascension in the tourism industry both in India and France. While the Indian government is putting great efforts in encouraging students to learn French, it is enforcing a lot of confidence between the two nations. This has enforced a lot of student exchange programs as well as educational opportunities in both countries. French students have started coming to India to pursue higher education. A lot of French citizens are also finding comfort in travelling to India due to the reduced language barrier. A steep augmentation in the number of tourists visiting the country is expected as France is showing a great deal of interest in India off lately. With the recent pandemic, we can see a downturn in tourism although still hopeful for it to swing back in action.
