 How Delf A1 exam is conducted?

The Diplôme d’études en langue française (English: Diploma in French Language Studies) or DELF for short, is a certification of French-language abilities for non-native speakers of French administered by the International Centre for French Studies. This exam is conducted 4 times in a year within an interval of 3 months. There are 6 levels- delf A1, delf A2, delf B1, delf B2, dalf C1 and dalf C2 in the language.

 Today this article will help you to understand the delf A1 level exam and will help you to clear all your doubts regarding delf A1 exam.

Scoring: Although the difficulty varies, the scoring of the DELF is identical at each level. Sections are scored out of 25, for a total of 100 marks per test. In order to pass, a minimum of 5/25 must be achieved in each section, and a minimum of 50/100 overall.

Documentation: The examination day, with a proof of identity (ID card, passport), you have to go to the place and at the time indicated on your notification. The notification is a document which will give to you by your examination center after your registration before one week of the examination. Its mentions your personal records (FAMILY NAME, first name(s), date of birth, place of birth) and indicates schedules and classrooms for yours group tests (listening, reading and writing) and for your individual test (speaking).

General Instructions for the exam:

Before taking your speaking test with the examiners, a supervisor will call you. He will check your notification and your proof of identity. Then, he will put you in the preparation room. He will explain to you the proceedings of DELF A1 oral production. For each part, he will indicate to you the instructions. He will make you take the 6 cards for the 2nd part (exchanging information) these cards will include one word (in French) each and 2 subjects for the 3rd part (role-play). Supervisor will provide candidate with a rough paper where students can write their key points. You have to choose one subject on the two proposed for this 3rd part. Take time to well-read the subjects and to make the good choice. If you do not understand well the instructions and/or the subjects, do not hesitate to ask explanations to the supervisor. Before beginning your preparation, it is important that you well understood the instructions and the subject. This is the first part of the delf exam in which candidate have a face to face interview with the jury. There are usually 2 teachers who take this test of the student, they can be male, female or both. You have 10 minutes to prepare parts 2 and 3. When your preparation is over, the supervisor will invite you to go to the oral examination room where there are two examiners. One of the examiners will be the examiner-actor. It is him who will interact with you. The other examiner will be the examiner-observer. He will stand back and will take notes. He will not intervene during the speaking test. His job of observer will be useful during the consultation with the examiner-actor to assess your oral production. So, do not be surprised if only one of the two examiners ask you questions. It is normal.

Production Orale:

This part is of 25 marks, In order to pass, a minimum of 5/25 must be achieved in this section.

After your installation in the speaking test room, the examiner-actor will ask you your notification and your proof of identity. Then, he will remind you the proceedings of DELF A1 oral production. Then, he will introduce the first part by saying one or two sentences in French like: “Nous allons commencer par la 1ère partie, l’entretien dirigé. Je vous pose des questions et vous répondez.” That means: “We are going to start the first part, the guided conversation. I ask you questions and you answer.” There are 3 parts in the delf A1 production orale, the first consist some basic question about the student like what is your name?, Tell me something about your family, etc. Then second part consist of dialogue exchange between the teacher and the student, this can include the topics like buying and selling of vegetables, furniture, etc. and at the last in the third round the examiner will give some French words to the candidate, using these words the candidate will ask one question for one word to examiner. All these questions are asked only in French not in English. This production orale part will take around 10-15 mins and after this the examiner will ask the candidate to leave the room after throwing the rough paper in which you have wrote your key points.

After the first part of the delf A1 exam there is a gap of 2-3 hours between the first and the remaining parts.

 Compréhension orale

This is the second part of the delf a1 examination.

This part is of 25 marks, In order to pass, a minimum of 5/25 must be achieved in this section.

This is the second part of the delf exam, where candidate is provided with some questions (Multiple choice question and subjective) and a rough sheet. This is the listening exam test of the candidate where the invigilator plays an audio which consist of multiple exercises of listening along with some instructions that the candidate needs to follow. This listening test may consist 4-5 exercises. The candidate have time to read the questions firstly then listen to the audio and at last time to write the responses. This same order is followed in other exercises of listening. After the completion of the listening exam the candidates are instructed to put their exam sheet below their seats.

Comprehension écrite:

This is the third part of the exam.  DELF A1 Reading (Compréhension écrite) 30minutes|25 marks. Compréhension questionnaires dealing with 4 or 5 written documents on everyday life. In this part candidate needs to read a written compréhension and answer some questions which can be both subjective and objective.

 DELF A1 Comprehension Ecrite (Reading Comprehension) consists of 2 parts. The first part consists of Filling in a record or a form, while the second part involves reading comprehension of 40-50 words on everyday topics and answer some questions based on that comprehension. Documents can be: carte postale, message, mail, annonce, programme, etc.

Production Ecrite :

This is the last part of the exam.

This part is of 25 marks, In order to pass, a minimum of 5/25 must be achieved in this section.

This is the part where the invigilator gives the exam sheet of production ecrite to the candidate, which consist of one question, reading that question the candidate needs to write a paragraph following the minimum words instruction within the given time period.

Note : Make sure you understand exactly what the questions are asking before reading the texts again. How to prepare for the DELF A1 reading test The most useful thing you can do is read often. If you can find texts in French which are also translated into your own language, read the French and then check for meaning. Timings : 30 minutes / 25 points

Two parts:

  1. Complete a form
  2. Write about daily life in the form of a postcard, email, photo captions, etc.
